Das soll ein Subwoofer sein? Dessen geradezu winziger Treiber, versteckt unter der Wartungsklappe des Notebooks, scheint zunächst nicht sonderlich vielversprechend zu sein. Doch dieser Eindruck täuscht gewaltig: Als 2.1-System zaubern die insgesamt 3 kleinen Lautsprecher einen für Notebook-Verhältnisse überaus beeindruckenden Klang hervor. Der bei den meisten Konkurrenten kaum wahrnehmbare Bassbereich ist überraschend kräftig und ermöglicht es, auch ohne zusätzliche Boxen Filme und Musik in guter Qualität zu genießen. Wenn es sein muss, ist dabei auch ein durchaus beachtlicher Maximalpegel verzerrungsfrei möglich. HP 436426-311

Für den Anschluss anderer Wiedergabegeräte stehen gleich zwei 3,5-Millimeter-Anschlüsse zur Verfügung, die selbst anspruchsvolle HiFi-Kopfhörer wie einen AKG K 701 souverän ansteuern können.
Mit einer minimalen Leistungsaufnahme von gerade einmal 10,1 Watt erweist sich unser Testkandidat als ausgesprochen sparsam, zumindest wenn man vergleichbar schnelle Gaming-Notebooks der Konkurrenz als Maßstab anlegt. Je nach Displayhelligkeit und aktivierten Funkmodulen steigt dieser Verbrauch im Leerlauf bis auf 25,6 Watt an, was noch immer als angemessen bezeichnet werden kann. HP 436426-351

In Spielen genehmigt sich das M14x im Schnitt 82,1 Watt, was in etwa dem zwar etwas größeren, aber nahezu identisch ausgestatteten One M73 entspricht. Die beiden Schenker-Modelle XMG A102 und A502 benötigen fast 20 Watt weniger, doch sind deren Ergebnisse durch den inaktiven CPU-Turbo geschönt. HP 436426-711

Maximal konnten wir dem Notebook eine Leistungsaufnahme von 138,6 Watt entlocken, welche jedoch nur in den ersten Sekunden unseres Stresstests (Prime95 und FurMark) zu beobachten ist. Kurz darauf führt das bereits zuvor beschriebene Throttling der Grafikkarte dazu, dass sich der Verbrauch bei ungefähr 100 Watt einpendelt. Das starke 150-Watt-Netzteil hat damit keine Probleme, wird allerdings recht warm. HP 436426-751

Viele der bislang getesteten Ivy-Bridge-Notebooks hatten so ihre Schwierigkeiten die guten laufzeiten der vorherigen Generation zu bestätigen. HP 436426-752

Dies scheint im Falle des M14x nicht anders zu sein: Mit knapp 6 Stunden im Battery Eater Readers Test (Energiesparmodus, WLAN aus, minimale Helligkeit) verfehlt das Notebook die Leistung seines Vorgängers um mehr als eine Stunde. Am selbst kann das nicht liegen: Dessen Kapazität blieb mit 62 Wh konstant. Ob die Hersteller mit BIOS-Optimierungen noch die eine oder andere Minute herauskitzeln können oder aber die neue Intel-Plattform generell kürzere Laufzeiten als Sandy Bridge erreicht, wird sich wohl erst im Verlauf der nächsten Wochen und Monate zeigen. Auch unser praxisnahes WLAN-Szenario bleibt etwas hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Bei angepasster Displayhelligkeit (164 cd/m², Stufe 5/8) sind hier maximal 4 Stunden und 9 Minuten mit einer ladung möglich. HP 454668-001

Den Abschluss bildet der Battery Eater Classic Test (Höchstleistung, Funkverbindungen und GPU aktiviert, maximale Helligkeit), der eine Aussage über Laufzeit unter Belastung liefert. Hier geht dem M14x nach 66 Minuten die Puste aus, was aber in Anbetracht der leistungsstarken Hardware akzeptabel ist. HP AH547AA

Teuer muss nicht gleich gut sein - ist es manchmal aber trotzdem. Ein Schnäppchen ist das Alienware M14x ganz sicher nicht, doch erhält der Käufer dafür auch ein hervorragendes Gaming-Notebook, welches nur wenige Schwächen vorweist. HP HSTNN-CB45

Die Kombination von Ivy Bridge und Kepler, genauer gesagt Core i7-3720QM und GeForce GT 650M, sorgt für eine ausgezeichnete Anwendungs- und Spieleleistung, lediglich die zu kleine mSATA-SSD trübt das Gesamtbild etwas. Auch abseits der reinen Leistungswerte kann das Notebook Punkte sammeln: Stabilität und Verarbeitung des Gehäuses bewegen sich auf höchstem Niveau, die Anschlussausstattung und Qualität der Eingabegeräte geben kaum Anlass zur Kritik. Ein besonderes Highlight ist zudem das kontrastreiche WXGA++-Display, an dem uns höchstens die stark spiegelnde Oberfläche stört. HP HSTNN-OB45

Obwohl das M14x als 14-Zöller mobiler als viele Konkurrenten sein könnte, verspielt es diesen Trumpf durch sein hohes Gewicht und die leicht gesunkene laufzeit. Der hohe Verbrauch sorgt zudem für eine enorme Wärme- und Geräuschentwicklung, welche vor allem in der warmen Jahreszeit zur Belastung wird - da tröstet auch das exzellente Soundsystem wenig. Wer über diese Einschränkungen hinwegsehen kann und darüber hinaus ein Budget von etwa 1650 Euro (Einstiegspreis 1150 Euro) zur Verfügung hat, erhält mit dem Alienware M14x ein gleichermaßen extravagantes wie hochwertiges Spiele-Notebook. Wenn es hingegen auch etwas dezenter und einfacher sein darf, bietet beispielsweise das Schenker A502 kaum schlechtere Leistungswerte zu einem erheblich günstigeren Kaufpreis. HP HSTNN-XB43

Das WLAN funktioniert einfach nicht oder die 3D-Grafik in Spielen lahmt trotz vorhandener Grafikkarte? Wer mit seinem neuen Notebook solche Überraschungen erlebt, sollte nicht gleich in Panik geraten. Manche Laptops haben eigene Schalter, mit denen Grafikbeschleuniger oder WLAN-Modul an- und ausgeschaltet werden können. Die Knöpfe oder Schieber finden sich meist oberhalb der Tastatur oder an den Seitenrändern des Gehäuses. Am 31. Mai 2012 will Gigabyte das leichteste Notebook der Welt vorstellen. Das geht aus einer von Ubergizmo veröffentlichten Einladung an Journalisten hervor. Außer der Tatsache, dass das Gerät besonders leicht sein soll, spart Gigabyte sich jedes weitere Detail. HP NBP6B17B1

Unklar ist dabei insbesondere, wie das Unternehmen den Begriff "Notebook" definiert. Wenn damit die Ausstattung mit Display, Tastatur und gemeint ist sowie die Fähigkeit, Windows auszuführen, lassen sich auch sehr kleine und leichte Geräte bauen. Ein Beispiel ist Sonys Vaio UX1, dessen Tastatur sich aber nur per Daumen bedienen ließ. Das 2007 vorgestellte Gerät gehörte damals zur längst vergessenen Kategorie der "Ultra Mobile PCs" (UMPC). Keilförmige Lithium-Polymer-s stecken auch in den besonders leichten und dünnen Ultrabooks, die es unter dieser von Intel erfundenen Markenbezeichnung erst seit Ende 2011 gibt. Der Auftrag ist an den taiwanesischen Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) Compal Electronics gegangen. Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den beiden Unternehmen aus Asien beginnt bereits im Juni 2012. Mit diesem Abkommen ist Compal ein großer Coup gelungen. Die Bestellungen umfassen insgesamt vier verschiedene Notebook-Modelle von Samsung. Schätzungen zufolge werden somit bis Jahresende zwischen zwei und drei Mio. Geräte geliefert. In Sachen Notebook ist Samsung am Weltmarkt abgeschlagen. Weiterhin hat der chinesische Hersteller auch seine restlichen Notebook-Serien überarbeitet und mit Intels neuen Ivy-Bridge-Prozessoren ausgestattet. Die T- und X-Serien lassen sich nun optional auch mit Thunderbolt beziehungsweise LTE ausstatten. Dank des im Produktnamen verewigten Carbons soll das neue Thinkpad X1 umgerechnet nur 1,36 Kilo wiegen und dennoch robust sein. Das IPS-Display soll eine Helligkeit von 300 cd/m² erreichen. Mit einem Zusatz hält das Gerät laut Hersteller bis zu 24 Stunden durch. Das X230t mit 12-Zoll-Display wird sich wie der Vorgänger X220t zu einem Tablet umwandeln lassen und optional einen Touchscreen haben. Beide Geräte werden (vermutlich optional) mit einem LTE-Modem angeboten. Welche Länder und Bänder der Modem-Chip unterstützen wird, ist noch nicht bekannt. Die T-Serie überarbeitet Lenovo mit den 14-Zöller T430 und T430s sowie dem T530 mit 15-Zoll-Display. Das besser ausgestattete T430s wird optional einen Thunderbolt-Anschluss haben, wenn ein Core i7 im Gerät steckt. Dessen 14-Zoll-Display hat die gleichen Eckdaten wie das des X1, der Bildschirm des T530 eine Full-HD-Auflösung bieten. Alle Geräte werden optional mit LTE erhältlich sein. When looking at the results, it quickly becomes obvious that AMD's A6-3420M can keep up quite well with Intel's entry-level CPUs, such as the Core i3-2310M or Pentium B960, in multi-core applications on the one hand. On the other hand, it declines significantly in single-core performance, and only performs on the level of an older Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 or Intel Celeron dual core T3000 CPU. Overall, the processing speed is sufficient for working smoothly with usual standard applications, such as Office and Internet, as well as image editing tasks. Merely filters with higher requirements may occasionally need a slightly longer processing time. You also need patience when converting MP3 to AAC via iTunes. Video Converting



As often before, we used an m4v video file with a resolution of 698 x 322 pixels as raw material for converting into an iPhone 4 compatible mp4 format with a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. We used Cyberlink's MediaEspresso 6.5 for this purpose. In another test with Elemental's Badaboom 2.0, we converted directly from a DVD to an iPhone compatible format (427 x 320). Both programs can exploit all 4 CPU cores; an alternative conversion via GPU is not possible due to the lack of support for the installed graphics units. MediaEspresso needed a bit longer than 23 minutes for the aforementioned task and Badaboom finished in 28.5 minutes. Those are good results, which however have the disadvantage that they almost completely load the system with over 97% in contrast to converting via GPU. A 640 GB hard disk from Toshiba, which provides a practice-orientated memory capacity, is installed in the test model. The MK6475GSX with a height of 9.5 mm works with revolution speeds of up to 5400 rpm and sports an 8 MB cache. More performance could be achieved by using a solid state drive or a hybrid hard disk. Models with a revolution speed of 7200 rpm are usually not recommendable because the slightly better performance is linked to increased power consumption, increased noise development and poorer money for GB ratio. Merely the HD 6520G integrated in the AMD A6-3420 is active in energy saving mode (assignment via AMD Vision Engine Control Center). Both GPUs are addressed in high performance mode and activated crossfire. The dedicated HD 7450 can't be selected separately. The performance of the graphics sector surpasses most entry-level graphics chips that operate discretely and delivers 3847 points in OpenGL Shading (Cinebench R10 64bit), 3700 points in 3DMark Vantage and 1133 points in 3DMark 11. We also performed Cinebench R11.5 on battery power and, like with the CPU, received nearly identical rates within the context of the measurement uncertainty (20.64 points). Those are fairly good results that are approximately on the same level as a dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6730M or HD 6650M. That is still better than the performance of sole CPU graphics units or sole entry-level graphics chips. Thus, the benchmark results confirm a theoretical increase of performance by combining these two GPU categories. How long this evaluation can be upheld is uncertain because the first benchmarks with the Ivy Bridge Intel HD Graphics 4000 supply similar if not better results with significantly less effort. Although the Toshiba Satellite L755D is definitely not a device designed for professional use, we ran the SPECviewperf 11 test outside the rating anyway. We time and again encounter users who are looking for an affordable alternative in place of expensive mobile workstations. The results however lag behind a HD 6470M (Elitebook 8560p) and consequently can't draw benefits from the power of two cores in this sector. We tested all games with both enabled and disabled crossfire function for the gaming performance. It's not possible to use the Radeon HD 7450 discretely. There are big differences to the fairly good benchmark results of 3DMark and Unigine Heaven (11.7 fps) in the practical test since the games we tested rarely used the dedicated graphics card in reality. The performance frequently can't exceed the results of a sole HD 6520G graphics integrated in the processor. ASUS F3Jp Battery

Older games, such as Sims 3, Racedriver GRID, World of Warcraft (DX11 also), Starcraft 2 and The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion as well as newer games like The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim and F1 2011, belong to this. DX9 tracks generally don't belong to the "eligible" software because support in this field is to first come with the introduction of AMD's Trinity generation. It is still uncertain if older games will also benefit from this. However, there are games (DX10/11) that benefit more or less from a second graphics chip. ASUS F3Jr Battery



At least the dedicated graphics chip is enabled in Anno 1404 and provides a base clock of 100 MHz, which occasionally even increases sporadically to 400 MHz. However, a performance increase is only seen in Anno 1404 when anti-aliasing and transparency mode (DX10) is enabled. The second GPU's capacity ranges between 1-12%, which ensures a few extra fps as well as the typical micro-stutters that a 2-GPU system involves. The CPU load is usually around 30% and falls back on all 4 cores. When the quality settings are increased as mentioned above, the CPU load rises to approximately 50%. ASUS F3Jv Battery



The results that we ascertained in Anno 2070 are rather contradictory. While we can record a performance increase of 35 fps when crossfire (48 fps / 83 fps) is used in low test settings, the frame rates drop by up to 50% in medium and high settings. AMD's HD 6520G is shown with only about 200 MHZ by AMD System Monitor and the additional HD 7450M works with an intensely fluctuating clock of 0 - 400 MHz. In these cases, 38 fps drop to 19 fps and 14 fps to 11 fps. ASUS F3Ka Battery



The race game Dirt 3 also benefits from Crossfire and delivers around 10 fps more than solely the integrated graphics (39 fps/27 fps) in very low and medium settings. However, the gap closes to about 2 fps (22 fps) in high settings. ASUS F3Ke Battery



Deus Ex Human Revolution supplies 61 fps in low settings. The second GPU isn't enabled because merely DX9 is used in this mode. The second GPU starts work when the settings are modified (DX11 + 1 AA) and the frame rate increases to 72 fps. 38 fps are still possible in medium settings, so our regular conditions. Gaming Verdict



When AMD's crossfire technology is supported by the single software track, then a noticeable performance increase is possible. Here, you may have to tinker around in the graphic options a bit more than usual to eventually find your perfect compromise of speed and quality. On the other hand, the second GPU can also lead to a deterioration of frame rates and have a counterproductive effect, as we observed in Anno 2070. Seen on the whole, the dual GPU system isn't yet fully developed and can't implement the partly good results of the synthetic benchmarks in practical use. Better developed drivers as well as a broader support by the single software tracks could remedy this. Currently, notebooks with a classic graphics solution, such as the Asus K53SK or Toshiba L750-W16, look a lot better in gaming. ASUS F3P Battery



Although the precision of the device is good, the supported gestures (multi-touch) are finicky. For example, while scrolling on a webpage or text document, the computer jumps uncontrollably upward or downward. Sometimes the scrolling does not work at all. We still like the touchpad and the comfortable mouse keys helped us make our decision. Tip: the touchpad is configured to deactivate as soon as an external mouse is connected. Great: the test model has the same Full HD panel which was used in the 3D version of the G74SX (LGD02C5). The display has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (ideal for high-end laptops), which gives the user enough room to work comfortably. A DTR you can use outdoors? The values of the display indicate that the test model is definitely ready for outdoors use. Thanks to the high brightness and matte panel, users will find outdoors use a pleasure as there are no distracting reflections and the content is clearly legible. ASUS F3Se Battery



The good horizontal viewing angle is another strength of the panel. Even with multiple viewers, everyone gets a good picture, which means that a family movie night or watching videos with friends is not a problem with the G75. Small disadvantage: the display can not be turned too far back as (typical to notebooks) the vertical viewing angle is pretty narrow. Overall, the G75 scores high in this section. We have been waiting a long time for Ivy Bridge. The latest Intel generation is not ground-breaking, but the new CPUs do use a smaller 22 nm manufacturing process and unique 3D transistors. Intel considers the new model to be "Tick+" ("Tock" would be a completely new architecture). ASUS F3Sv Battery



The die has seen a commensurate shrink from 216 mm² down to 160 - meaning Ivy Bridge is not only faster than Sandy (especially in graphics - see our HD Graphics 4000 benchmark), but smaller as well.



Asus has installed a Core i7-3720QM in our test model - a very powerful quad-core CPU. The processor commands 1.4 billion transistors (Sandy Bridge: maximum 995 million). The clock frequency ranges between 2.6-3.6 GHz under load which places the quad-core processor between the older high-end models: the i7-2920XM (2.5-3.5 GHz) and the i7-2960XM (2.7-3.7 GHz). Great: despite similar performance, the TDP has dropped from 55 W to 45 W. The Core i7-3720QM has a smaller L3 cache in comparison to the Sandy Bridge elite (6 MB vs. 8 MB), but this is not noticeable in the performance benchmarks. ASUS F3SV-A1 Battery



Most features are known from the previous generation. Turbo Boost overclocks the processor automatically and Hyper-Threading allows each core to handle two threads - theoretically doubling the number of available cores. The clock frequency of the Core i7-3720QM rises significantly using Turbo Boost - as long as the processor stays acceptably cool. For example: in Cinebench R10, the quad-core ran between 3.4 GHz (multi-core rendering) and 3.6 GHz (single-core rendering). An amazing performance - most CPUs can only dream of such high speeds. Performance in the stress test was less attractive (Furmark & Prime). Although the CPU never reached critical temperatures, it did have to clock itself down to 1.2 GHz to maintain acceptable thermals. Still, the throttling of the G74SX was much more critical - 800 MHz. ASUS F3U Battery



As expected, the Core i7-3720QM offers amazing performance: 6.8 points in Cinebench R11.5. The score beats the Core i7-2630QM of the G74SX by about 40% (4.83 points). Top models like the Core i7-2920XM (6.19 points @ One M73-2N) and Core i7-2960XM (6.33 points @ Schenker XMG P701 PRO) do not stand a chance against their new brother. 6.8 points places the processor at the same level as the extremely fast desktop processor: Core i7-2600k (3.4-3.8 GHz). Asus has picked one of the fastest graphics cards currently available. The GeForce GTX 670M is based on the GF114 (Fermi architecture) - essentially a rebrand of the GTX 570M. Nvidia's promising that future 600-series mobile chips like the GeForce GTX 660M and (according to rumors) the GTX 680M will use the Kepler architecture. Apart from the micro-stutters, we were confronted with another problem during the test, which we had also observed in the Acer Aspire 7560G and the HP g7-1353eg: the resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels is not supported. In order to supply comparable rates with other devices, we performed the corresponding benchmarks in 1280 x 768 and devalued the frame rates by the missing pixel count. We try to simulate the performance with this trick, although the determined figures should be viewed skeptically and are not included in the comparison charts for this reason. ASUS G50V Battery

The 305E7A's noise development is extremely low for a gaming suitable multimedia device. The fan runs permanently even when idling, but it won't be noticed adversely with a maximum of 31.4 dB (A). Proponents of silence can also enable the Silent Mode which reduces the noise to an almost inaudible 30.7 dB (A). Merely the quiet access noise of the hard disk can be heard then. The noise level increases only marginally to 32.5 dB (A) during typical gaming load simulated by means of 3DMark 06 - an excellent rate. We even recorded 31.1 dB (A) in Silent Mode without any limitations in performance during normal (3D) applications. The biggest noise source of the laptop proves to be the loud DVD drive that generates up to 35.6 dB (A). It even drowned out the fan noise during our stress test. Remarkable is that as soon as the notebook goes back to idling, the noise level also drops within fractions of a second. ASUS G50V-A1 Battery

Samsung has managed to keep the temperature development within limits despite the low noise emissions. The case only gets lukewarm without load; we measured the highest rates on the bottom with a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius. When we start FurMark and Prime95 at the same time on the notebook, the temperatures climb up to 48.1 degrees Celsius in the vent's vicinity after a while. However, the device remains significantly cooler in the wrist rest area so that even longer gaming sessions won't end with blisters. ASUS G50V-A2 Battery

Inside the case, the A6-3420M settles to a harmless 80 degrees Celsius after a longer period of full load. We unfortunately couldn't record the Radeon HD 6470M's temperature, but we didn't notice throttling or stability issues at any time. ASUS G50V-AK062G Battery

We are accustomed to inferior speakers from the majority of notebooks. However, the Samsung 305E7A is noticed unfavorably even when we consider this fact. Our biggest point of criticism is the unpleasant, hissing high frequency range at merely a normal volume. It can't be improved much via the setting options in the Sound Panel either. The almost non-existent basses are just as disappointing. But this isn't much different in most contenders, with a few exceptions. ASUS G50V-AK118J Battery

At least the analog jack provides a relatively good signal quality and enough power to even drive high-impedance headphones. Optionally, the HDMI port for the digital output of multi-channel sound is also available. ASUS G50V-AS067C Battery

Long gone are the days when AMD based notebooks unnecessarily wasted power when idling. With 9.4 to 13.8 watts, our test device proves to be just as energy-efficient as the Llano based devices from Acer and HP. The switchable graphics technology contributes a great deal to this, as it automatically disables the dedicated Radeon HD 6470M outside 3D applications. ASUS G50V-EP048C Battery

The load consumption is just as efficient with 39.3 to 56.1 watts and is absolutely appropriate in view of the previously determined performance rates. Samsung should perhaps consider including a stronger power adapter though. Samsung's 17 inch device unfortunately doesn't grant a really long battery runtime. The laptop drains the small 48 watt hour battery after only 5 hours and 26 minutes in the BatteryEater Reader's test (energy saving mode, wifi off, minimum screen brightness), which is approximately an hour less than the Aspire 7560G manages. When wifi is enabled and the screen is set to around 150 cd/m2, the runtime shrinks to 3 hours and 24 minutes. For this test we open different websites and HD videos in an interval of 40 seconds so to simulate a close as possible practical application scenario. ASUS G50V-P8600 Battery

According to the motto "power comes from the power outlet", you should better keep the power adapter close at hand when both the CPU and graphics card are put under full load. Merely 71 minutes pass before the BatteryEater Classic test (high performance, wifi on, maximum screen brightness) forces the laptop back to the outlet. It is an interesting idea that the Samsung 305E7A uses to win buyers: A quad core processor built in a matte 17 inch case together with a crossfire graphics solution. That sounds like a high-performance multimedia bundle, and what's more, at a very attractive price. ASUS G50V-X2 Battery

Unfortunately, the notebook looses important points in the first meters. The stability of the light plastic case is disappointing. Also, the lack of a USB 3.0 port might deter the one or other buyer. However, we have to make allowances for the manufacturer since a few contenders exhibit similar flaws. ASUS G50V-X5 Battery

We liked the excellent input devices a lot more. Both the keyboard as well as the touchpad make a high-end impression and almost eliminate the need for connecting external peripherals. Office-related matters, such as the low noise development, the matte screen and the good application performance, generally belong to the notebook's strengths. ASUS G50VM (All) Battery

Those who only look at the 3DMark scores could say something similar about the 3D performance. However, disturbing micro-stutters frequently ruin gaming fun in real life and crossfire partly doesn't work at all. In these cases, the 305E7A only finds itself on a level with slow entry-level models. ASUS G50VM-A1 Battery

It is particularly these problems that ultimately prevent the Samsung from being the best of the class. A single, faster midrange graphics card, as found in the Packard Bell F4311, is clearly the better solutions for gamers. Our configuration of the notebook, currently available for around EUR 550, can thus be primarily recommended as a work device ASUS G50VM-A2 Battery

"The air is thinner at the top" - this also applies to desktop replacement notebooks with a display size upwards of 18 inches. Our reviewed device, the Asus K93SM-YZ085V, certainly doesn't have a lot of competition in terms of size at the moment. ASUS G50VM-DP01 Battery

At least off the top of our heads, the only rivals we can think of straight away are the Toshiba Qosmio X500, or the Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G. Notebooks such as this certainly don't belong to the mainstream. With Asus in on the other hand, 18.4 inch devices apparently appear to belong to the standard repertoire. There definitely doesn't seem to be any other way of explaining the fact that the Taiwanese manufacturer has only recently thoroughly overhauled the K93 series. Asus has proclaimed the four new models which can perform the tasks of a PC as high performance all-round notebooks, which can be considered to be full-scale desktop replacement notebooks for this reason. The price range of the current K93 series spans a range between 849 and 1149 Euros, whereby the K93SM-YZ085V we have for review is the top model with an Intel Core i7-2670QM processor. The more affordable models of the K93 family either have less powerful processors, or forgo other particular features, such as a Blu-ray drive, or a large amount of storage capacity or RAM. What they all have in common is the very big display, and other Asus specific features. Among these belong, among others, the Asus IceCool design, which is supposed to guarantee a permanently cool palm resting area, and the Palm Proof technology, which should prevent inadvertent touchpad entries by differentiating between a finger and a palm. The case of the Asus K93SM-YZ085V above all else stands out due to its sheer size. With dimensions of 441 x 295 x 42-55 millimeters, it could also serve a purpose as a small table top. The weight of 4.1 kilograms predestines the device more for an evening workout than for mobile use, although it clearly wasn't developed for this purpose as a self-proclaimed desktop replacement. The distance between the office desk and the living room can still easily be traversed with this sizeable device. ASUS G50VT-A1 Battery

Optically the Asus K93SM can also fit in well in a living room. The dark brown colored surfaces with a herringbone pattern looks qualitative, although the shiny surface attracts finger prints and dust like moths are attracted to light. The display lid is pleasantly flat, and the frame could be a little finer at the top and bottom. The hinges have been made very robust. Something that is definitely required for this display size, especially since the two display hinges are located so far towards the outside of the case. ASUS G50VT-A2 Battery

They nevertheless failed to impress us entirely. Touching the display when it is open, or letting it go after changing the opening angle, results in the display still wobbling for several seconds - particularly when playing a movie this can be very annoying. The palm resting area is pleasantly wide, something that isn't a particular success when considering the entire size of the notebook though. The roughened surface provides enough grip when typing. The fact that the keyboard is enclosed in a glossy frame on the other hand has negative connotations when light falls upon it from unfavorable directions. What is also not perfect, is the tray for the internal Blu-ray drive. Fully extended this wobbles considerably, and should therefore be loaded with media very carefully. If not, it can quickly happen that the DVD is wedged between the drive and the case, and eventually gets scratched. Altogether the manufacturing quality of the Asus K93SM gives a good and stable impression. The gaps between panels also don't give an reason for criticism. Merely the battery lid can be pushed in to the extent of causing concern when the notebook is closed. Heavy items should therefore not be left standing on it. ASUS G50VT-B1 Battery

A comprehensive range of features could certainly be expected from a desktop replacement notebook, which doesn't allow its applications to be curtailed by the absence of important additions. With the exception of exotic or so far still very rare interfaces such as FireWire or Thunderbolt, Asus have proven themselves to be very generous with their "giant notebooks". Along with the obligatory USB-2 ports - altogether 3 on the right side of the K93SM - there is also a USB 3.0 port available. ASUS G50VT-BBB Battery

This theoretically 10 times faster interface is located on the left side close towards the front, and is backwards compatible with slower USB standards. Also on the left side are a Gigabit LAN port, and VGA and HDMI interfaces for connecting external monitors or a television. A DVI interface is not provided, whereby the HDMI port can also be used for driving monitors with a DVI input by using an adapter. The range of interfaces is completed by two 3.5 mm mini-jack sockets for line-in and line-out audio, as well as a memory card slot on the front left of the device. The slot accepts MMC and SD cards, as well as Memory Sticks. For the increasingly popular microSD cards, an adapter is required. ASUS G50VT-EP024G Battery

Even though the Asus K93SM-YZ085V is the top model in its series, it is nevertheless still missing Bluetooth for short-range communications. This may appear to be inconsequential at first glance, but if the notebook is supposed to replace a PC entirely, Bluetooth should definitely be included - for example for synchronizing smartphones or connecting to headsets for video telephony. A webcam is included, and is embedded into the upper display frame. ASUS G50VT-X1 Battery

Apart from this, Asus provides the usual standard communication options. The WLAN module supports 802.11b/g/n, and thus provides a net data rate of up to 240 Mbps, although the K93SM only transmits using the excessively utilized 2.4 GHz band, and the 5 GHz band is not supported. Hard-wired LAN connections operate using Gigabit Ethernet, something that can also be expected in the mean time. ASUS G50VT-X2 Battery

The accessories included with the delivery don't provide a lot of cause for discussion: Along with the device itself and the AC adapter, there is only a thin manual, a battery notice, a warranty booklet, and a notice that the manufacturer no longer includes recovery DVDs. Furthermore there is already a corresponding partition on the hard drive, which can be used for restoring Windows, or for creating a recovery DVD. ASUS G50VT-X2AM Battery

On the bottom of the notebook, there are two openings intended for being opened by users. The panel providing access to a compartment where a second hard drive can be installed is secured by a single screw. The panel concealing the primary hard drive, RAM and the battery, is secured by four screws. Also worthy of note is that the Asus K93SM is also able to operate without a battery. Attempting to free the cooling fan from dust requires extended access to the inside of the device. Provision for this is not provided by the manufacturer, and associated warranty claims as a result of this "operation on the open heart" are likely to be rejected if things go wrong. Bildschirm: Entspiegelt, aber nicht besonders hell

Allerdings ist das Display im Akoya E6228 nicht übermäßig hell. Auch die Farbdarstellung ist ordentlich, aber nicht überragend – für Film und Fotos gibt es also bessere Notebooks, allerdings nicht zu diesem Preis. Für drinnen reicht die Leuchtstärke auf jeden Fall. Im betrieb lässt sich der Bildschirm nicht ganz so hell stellen wie an der Steckdose – es fehlen rund 30 cd/qm. HP HSTNN-LB1X

Mit der Tastenkombination „Fn“ und „1“ können Sie übrigens einen so genannten Outdoor Kontrast aktivieren. Der tut aber nichts anderes, als die Darstellung zu invertieren – und zeigt dann weiße Schrift auf schwarzem Hintergrund statt wie üblich schwarze Schrift auf weißem Hintergrund. Medion Akoya E6228 im Test: Fazit

Die Ausstattung des Medion Akoya E6228 ruft mit Core i3, 500-GB-Festplatte und integrierter Grafik zunächst keine Begeisterung hervor. Für den Preis von 499 Euro geht sie allerdings in Ordnung und reicht den meisten Nutzern aus, die ein Notebook nicht zum Spielen brauchen. Hier macht der große Arbeitsspeicher mehr Sinn. Auf aktuelle Schnittstellen wie USB 3.0 müssen Sie nicht verzichten. Und Gelegenheitsnutzer sowie Einsteiger freuen sich über das üppige Software-Paket. HP HSTNN-XA18

Wenn Sie 50 bis 100 Euro mehr ausgeben, bekommen Sie allerdings ein Notebook mit besserer CPU und vor allem einer spieletauglicheren Grafikkarte. Wenn Sie ein Allround-Notebook wollen, das fast allen Anwendungen gewachsen ist, ist das die bessere Wahl.

Die drei Modelle SV-T1111M1ES, SV-T1311M1ES und SV-T1311W1ES der Vaio T-Serie sollen dank gebürstetem Aluminium und Magnesium-Chassis ein Hingucker sein, verspricht Sony. Am hinteren Teil des Displays sei zudem eine glänzende Leiste angebracht. Klappt man die Ultrabooks auf, sorge der Rapid Wake + Eco-Modus für fast sofortige Einsatzbereitschaft. Beim Zuklappen verfalle das Ultrabook wieder in einen energiesparenden Tiefschlaf. Der solle so bis zu 90 Tage lang durchhalten (im Standby-Modus). Ohne Standby schaffe jedes Vaio T-Ultrabook maximal 9 Stunden – zumindest in der SSD-Variante. In der Hybrid-Variante profitiere der Käufer immerhin von einer flotteren Startzeit. HP HSTNN-XB1X

Die drei vorgestellten Sony-Ultrabooks gibt es in zwei Bildschirmgrößen: 11,6 Zoll und 13,3 Zoll. Sony verspricht neben einem großen Touchpad (tastenfrei) viele Schnittstellen wie HDMI, VGA, USB 3.0 und 2.0, LAN-Buchse und SD/MMC-Steckplatz. Eingebaut ist auch eine HD-Webcam namens „Exmor for PC“. HP HSTNN-XB1Y

Das Modell SV-T1311M1E mit 13,3-Zoll-Display (1366x768 Pixel) verfügt über einen Intel Core i3-2367M, 4 GB RAM und in der Hybrid-Variante eine 320 GB-Festplatte. Die Grafikberechnungen übernimmt der Intel-Chip HD Graphics 3000. Das Ultrabook ist 22,6 x 32,3 cm groß und 1,78 cm dick. Damit gehört es zu den dickeren Ultrabooks. Es wiegt laut Sony circa 1,6 kg. Des Weiteren verspricht Sony satten Sound dank xLOUD- und Clear Phase-Technik. Für Video-Fans sei die vorinstallierte Software „PlayMemories Home“. Mit ihr sollen sich HD-Clips aufpolieren lassen. Außerdem vorinstalliert: „Adobe Acrobat X Standard“ zum Erstellen von PDF-Dokumenten.

Wenn das Ultrabook verloren geht oder gestohlen wird, kommt der „Intel Anti-Theft Service“ zum Einsatz. Dieser ist in der Hardware integriert und soll Diebstähle erkennen und dann das Gerät sperren können. Allerdings gibt es nur eine 90-tägige Probeversion von „Intel Anti-Theft Service“. Im edlen HP Envy 15-3040nr arbeitet ein schneller Core i7 mit 2,2 Gigahertz Taktfrequenz und vier Kernen, der Arbeitsspeicher fällt mit acht Gigabyte recht großzügig aus. Eine Radeon HD 7690M kümmert sich um die auch unter 3D schnelle Bildausgabe, die Festplatte nimmt maximal 750 Gigabyte Daten auf. Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung des optisch ansprechenden Notebooks liegt bei 1.799€. HP 538693-271

Vorteile des HP Envy 15-3040nr

Für einen gesalzenen Preis, wie ihn Dell für dieses Notebook verlangt, sollte der Käufer eine einwandfreie Verarbeitung und tolle Hardware erwarten können - und dieser Wunsch wird größtenteils auch erfüllt. Über die verwendeten Materialien und die Stabilität des Envy-Notebooks gibt es nichts zu meckern, das Design besticht darüber hinaus durch angenehme Zurückhaltung ohne viele "Spielereien". Eine (fast perfekte) Augenweide ist auch das verbaute IPS-Panel: Der Bildschirm bietet so gut wie keine Blickwinkelabhängigkeit, strahlt selbst unter ungünstigen Lichtverhältnissen noch sehr hell und zeigt selbst auf dem relativ kleinen Raum von 15,6 Zoll die FullHD-Auflösung von 1.920 * 1.080 Pixeln. GPU Leistung ist, wie erwartet, nicht Schlüsselmerkmal der Serie 9 und sollte daher auch kein wesentlicher Entscheidungsfaktor für die Zielgruppe des 900X3B sein. Die integrierte Intel HD 3000 wurde bereits umfassend gebenchmarkt und getestet und sollte für HD-Videos, Flash-Spiele und andere einfache 3D-Anwendungen mehr als ausreichen. Die HD 3000 wird nun von der HD 4000 abgelöst werden, und wer auch nur gelegentlich Computerspiele spielt, wird mit der integrierten Sandy-Bridge-GPU unzufrieden sein. Beim 3DMark Vantage erreicht das Samsung insgesamt nur 1644 Punkte und spielt damit in der gleichen Liga wie alle anderen Ultrabooks bis jetzt. Die aufstrebende HD 4000 würde die Frameraten abhängig vom Spiel um etwa 20-80 Prozent anheben. Akku Compaq 375942-001

Das 900X3B ist im Idle-Betrieb und auch während normaler Benutzung und Videowiedergabe kaum hörbar. Während konstanter, wenig intensiver Nutzung konnten wir keine willkürlichen Phasen mit mäßigem oder lautem Lüftergeräusch beobachten. Dies ist für sich schon beeindruckend. Auch dass eine mechanische Festplatte fehlt, trägt zu der niedrigen Geräuschentwicklung bei. Wenn die Lüfter aus irgendeinem Grund doch stören sollten, kann der Benutzer den Silent Mode direkt via Tastatur aktivieren. Damit bringt und braucht das Notebook zwar weniger Leistung, arbeitet aber geräuschlos. Das Notebook wird auch bei der flüssigen Wiedergabe von 1080p-Youtube-Videos leise bleiben. Somit eignet sich das Samsung bestens für mobile Videowiedergabe unterwegs oder in geräuschempfindlichen Umgebungen wie Klassenzimmern oder Bibliotheken. Akku Compaq 375974-001

Wie üblich steigt das Lüftergeräusch an, wenn das Gerät mittels FurMark und Prime95 vollständig ausgelastet wird, allerdings nicht besonders hoch. Wir zeichneten maximal 37.4 dB auf, womit das 900X3B bei weitem leiser arbeitet als die meisten anderen Ultrabooks wie das XPS 13 oder das Toshiba Portege Z830. Außerdem wird der Benutzer nie den Geräuschpegel des Stresstests erreichen, wenn er nicht Computerspiele oder andere fordernde Aufgaben ausführt. Das 900X3B ist also in Bezug auf Geräuschentwicklung äußerst unproblematisch. Akku Compaq APBT01A

Das niedrige Lüftergeräusch geht allerdings zu Lasten hoher Oberflächentemperaturen. Akku Compaq APBT01C Sogar im Idle-Betrieb ist das 900X3B gut warm und kann an wärmeren Tagen leicht die 30-Grad-Celsius-Marke überschreiten. Der Temperaturanstieg ist noch gnadenloser, wenn das System mit Furmark und Prime95 voll ausgelastet wird, da hier bestimmte Quadranten bis zu 47 Grad Celsius und mehr erreichen können. Bei länger dauernder oder sogar kurzer Benutzung fühlen sich derart hohe Temperaturen unbestritten unangenehm auf der Haut an. Erfreulicherweise konnten wir feststellen, dass der vordere Bereich des Notebooks im Vergleich zum rückwärtigen Teil über 10 Grad Celsius kühler bleiben kann. Handgelenken und Fingern des Benutzers bleibt also die Hitze erspart. Trotzdem sind intensive Aufgaben auf dem Schoß, wenn kein Tisch oder eine flache Oberfläche zur Verfügung stehen, problematisch. Beim normalen Internet-Surfen, bei Videowiedergabe und Textverarbeitung sind jedoch keine so hohen Temperaturen zu erwarten. Dennoch ist dieses Notebook bei normaler Nutzung deutlich wärmer als andere ultra-schlanke Laptops. Akku Compaq APBT01B

Man beachte, dass sich die Lüfter an der Unterseite des 900X3B befinden und direkt nach unten zeigen. Um die Luftaustausch zu erleichtern, ist es daher empfehlenswert, mehr Platz zwischen Notebook und Tisch zu schaffen, da die Gummifüße relativ flach sind. Die Temperaturen fielen deutlich, als wir das Notebook etwas mehr über die flache Oberfläche anhoben. Akku Compaq HSTNN-A10C

Wir testeten auf Throttling, indem wir mit den bereits zuvor erwähnten Prime95 und FurMark Programmen CPU und GPU auslasteten. Um vollständigen Systemstress zu simulieren, führten wir Prime95 und FurMark gleichzeitig über eine Stunde lang aus. Hier pendelten sich CPU und GPU bei 1600 MHz und 700 MHz ein. Subjektiv klingen sie besser als durchschnittlich, wobei die maximale Lautstärke für einen kleinen Konferenzraum ausreicht. Der Klang ist nicht so knackig oder laut wie etwa beim 2012 Envy 15, doch selbst bei größerer Lautstärke nimmt man wenig Verzerrungen wahr und die Balance übertrifft unsere Erwartungen an solch ein dünnes und leichtes Notebook.
